Pacific County to Test All Hazard Alert Broadcast Sirens

Friday, January 25th, 2008

SOUTH BEND – Pacific County Emergency Management will be testing the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. The sirens will ring the Westminster Chimes, and will follow with a verbal message indicating that this is a test only. A preview of the warning system playing Westminster Chimes is available on the World Wide Web at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb3ICGMgnVo.

In actual events, the sirens will sound a constant tone (no warble) for three continuous minutes, which will be followed by a verbal message. The Pacific County Tsunami Plan calls for the sirens to be activated any time Pacific County is placed within the area of a tsunami warning. A tsunami warning means that an earthquake in the Pacific Rim may have generated a tsunami wave that has the potential to reach the Pacific County coastline within a three hour window of time.

Residents are encouraged to listen for the test and to report any concerns to the Pacific County Emergency Management Office at (360) 875-9340/(360) 642-9340 on Monday, January 28, 2008, as this will be the first full test of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast system.

Festival Banner Calendar for 2008

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Greetings Festival Heads & Tourism Partners,

Mike Kitzman and I have come up with a solution to our festival banner dilemma. With every festival now obtaining banners, we are running out of time to have each banner up before a festival takes place. We are sending a timeline that will give the dates each banner will be put up, how long it will be up, when it will come down, and the festival banner that will follow.

For those festivals that are running concurrently with each other we have decided to be fair and give each festival the opportunity to be first. For example, The Beach to Chowder Run and the DOG are the same weekend this year. The DOG will go up first and run for one week, then come down and the Beach to Chowder Run will run for the week leading up to the event. In 2009, if the events run the same weekend the Beach to Chowder Run will go up first and the DOG will run second. Therefore, each festival will be in a rotating system for all advertising fairness.

Due to the amount of banners that we already have to display, we will no longer be accepting banners for any other festival without prior approval from the City of Long Beach staff. If you have an existing banner, we will notify you if your banner needs to be repaired or replaced. The following banners are in need of attention at this time; the Rodeo banner.

The schedule is as follows:

Old Business
None
New Business

  1. Jerry Phillips noted that Ragan Andrew is putting together bags for cruise ship operators and is seeking donations of ad specialty or other items. Deadline is January 22nd. She is NOT looking for brochures but rather items stamped/tagged/stickered with your business name. Contact Ragan at the City of Long Beach, 642-4421.
  2. Chris Stephens from the Pacific County Auditor’s office, made a brief presentation regarding the upcoming election process. All voters must choose a party to vote in the primary. Doing so allows you to vote in the primary but does not keep your affiliation with the party; data is expunged after 90 days. If you don’t want to affiliate with a party, you can vote the non-partisan ballot but not the Presidential Primary. Any questions should be directed to the Auditor’s office.
  3. Rainier Hauser, Superintendent of Ocean Beach School District, along with Karen Brownlee, Citizens for Better Education, speaking on behalf of the school levy. There will be 2 propositions. One is the Maintenance and Operations levy, which happens approximately every 3 years and is needed to keep basic operations in place. This is because the state does not fully fund our schools. It is not a new tax; it keeps the existing tax going so as to maintain the current service level. The second levy is a new piece, a Technology levy, 15, 17 and then 19 cents per $1000 over 3 years. Our kids aren’t keeping up with others throughout the state in terms of technology and it takes more and improved equipment to turn that around. The two pieces added together net a total of $1.44 per $1000 (assessed property value); surrounding districts range $3.19 -$4.08. Because the building levy is dropping off now, the combined total is less than the per $1000 rate in 2005. Q & A regarding construction project and misinformation in the community. Articles in the Chinook Observer can be reviewed for more information, else call the District Office
  4. LBMA/City After Hours being planned for April at the World Kite Museum. Date TBD. Volunteers requested; contact Mikel Burns.

Theme is “The Summer Vacation You Never Had”. BBQ, wine, noshes. More info to come. Regarding the TV ads, Una reports that people coming into the office are saying they heard about us on the tv &/or radio. Additionally, she is seeing more visitors from Eastern Washington and Oregon, which can be attributed to the radio and tv spots. She is also seeing three times the number of Canadian visitors, which can be attributed to the exchange rate. Most of our out-of-state visitors are from California. Most out-of-country visitors are from Germany. The number of visitors coming from websites continues to increase, as does the traffic to funbeach.com. Overall, we are ‘holding our own’ while counties around us are losing market share. Most recently, visitation is down since the storms of early December.
