Tsunami Siren Update & Additional Test Dates

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Good Morning,

I am sending this to all residents who responded by email to the siren test.   Thank you all for your response and efforts to assist with the testing.  Many of you reported a successful test, but others reported an unsuccessful test.  More often reported was low volume with too short a duration.

First off I have to explain that based on the previous Wednesday’s test the length of the 10/22 test was shortened.  The Westminster Chimes start off at full volume and due to concerns expressed by some residents regarding possible hearing damage, the length of the actual test was shortened, believing that the siren would also start at full volume.  We discovered as a result of this test (what else is testing for?) that is not the case.  The actual siren tone needs some warm up time, so a 30 second test, which was the final plan on 10/22, did not result in a valid test of the siren tone.

PCEMA will be testing again, on November 5, and the first Wednesday of every month hereafter.  The test on November 5 will run with a 90 second siren tone.  Once the siren tone is validated, a decision may be made to use Westminster Chimes for all monthly tests in order to respond to those residents who have expressed concern regarding possible hearing damage.  That option will be discussed at a future PCEMA Council meeting along with regular test results.

Thank you again for your assistance!

Tsunami Siren Test

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Hello there!

This is just a quick reminder that there will be another test of the tsunami siren system on Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at noon.  This week the sirens will be set off for 30 seconds with the actual warning siren tone.  This will be the first time the actual warning tone has been tested in Pacific County.

The PCEMA office is interested in receiving feedback from the Long Beach Peninsula regarding areas where the sirens are heard or not heard.  If you are within hearing range of a siren (sirens are reported to have a one mile audible radius) please call the PCEMA office at 642-9336 or 642-9338 and leave a message (PCEMA personnel will be in an EOC exercise at the time of the test) regarding your observations.

Thank you for your  interest and involvement!  Community involvement and support are key to the success of a good emergency management program.

What the heck is a White Elephant After Hours Social?

Most of all, it’s a chance for the business community to get together and have some fun.  White Elephant gifts are usually gag gifts or items you want to re-gift.  Don’t take this too seriously!  We’ll have a few extras on hand so don’t let deciding on a gift keep you from joining the fun!
Here’s how the exchange works:  Everyone draws a number.  To start, the person with #1 picks out a gift, opens it so all can see what it is. Then the person with #2 gets to “steal” any unwrapped gift or chose from those not yet opened. Then person #3 gets to “steal” any already opened gift or chose one of the ones still unopened.  And so it continues. If someone steals your gift, you can steal someone else’s gift, or choose an unopened gift.  Note: A gift can only be “stolen” once during a turn and once a gift has had 3 “owners” the 3rd owner of a gift gets to keep it; it can’t be stolen again.
After the last turn, the person who started (since he didn’t get a chance at the beginning) can put back the gift and “steal”. Ruth Ann may decide to give everyone one more turn…
